Personal Mermaid Junk Journal

Last month I went on a cruise and I made a Personal Mermaid Junk Journal. In this Personal Mermaid Junk Journal, I used images from Calico Collage, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists and things from my stash.

Personal Mermaid Junk Journal

To help new junk journal creators I made a video on How to make a Personal Mermaid Junk Journal.

My method is pretty straightforward. Using a basket I collect the items I want to use for the junk journal. In this case, I collected sea themed items, like stickers, scrapbook paper, digital images, stamps and more.

Personal Mermaid Junk Journal

The next decision is to figure out what size I want the journal. Since I was using Calico Collage digital images from two different kits, A Mermaid Tale and Enchanted I deiced to use those to determine the size of my journal.

Personal Mermaid Junk Journal

Once the size has been determined, cut the pages to the desired size. Next, add some color with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists. I love to use stencils with the mists for added texture.

Personal Mermaid Junk Journal

Since this was going to be my Personal Mermaid Junk Journal that I would use while on a cruise I decided that I didn’t want bulky embellishments to get in the way of writing. This journal stayed very simple.

The cover was cardstock that I used a stencil and then sewed the Calico Collage image from A Mermaid Tale on top. While looking around in my stash I found a pretty Prima Pearl embellishment that I knew would be perfect for the cover.

Personal Mermaid Junk Journal

The mermaid charm that was attached to this Personal Mermaid Junk Journal I found at Hobby Lobby on clearance. (I didn’t remember for sure in the video, but went shopping again and found more at Hobby Lobby). Isn’t she cute on the journal?

A Mermaid Tale Junk Journal

The first thing I do is pull my digital papers to the front if I’m going to be using some in the journal. My reason for doing so is this will determine the size of all the pages I use in my junk journal. I prefer to have all the pages the same size. Occasionally I’ll do a journal with all different sizes of papers but when working with digital images I like using the size they are printed.

A Mermaid Tale Junk Journal

Having pulled the digital images out of A Mermaid Tale Junk Journal digital kit, I’ll see if I want to print lines on the back side and then trim the page of the white area down to the page image. Now I measure this page and that is the size I’ll cut the rest of my pages.

Napkin Embellishments

When all the pages are cut I’ll then decide to either stamp on the pages and Add Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists.

A Mermaid Tale Junk Journal

If I’m working on a theme then I will make embellishments as I make the journal. And by theme one that is not going to cross over from another very well. lol Like the Mermaid isn’t a Jane Austin style journal so you wouldn’t really find one in the other. But I will make a batch of Jane Austin style elements to use in lots of journals. Mermaid stuff I try to make as I need so I don’t have to store it when I’m done if it didn’t get used. 😉

Then I proceed in stacking the pages and adding the embellishments, including journal cards and tags. The cover is chosen out of cardstock this time to keep it simple and I liked the pattern. Using my sewing machine I sewed the elements in place. Doesn’t the stitching make you want to touch the cover?

The cover for A Mermaid Tale Junk Journal is attached to the signature of pages with a pamphlet stitch. I used a pretty teal blue ribbon slipped through the binding and tied in a bow to hold it closed and the journal is done.

There are 10 sheets of paper folded to make 40 pages in this A Mermaid Tale Junk Journal. The journal measures 5.25 inches by 7.25 inches. It is for sale in my shop and if sold out a similar one can be made feel free to contact me through my Facebook page to discuss.

How to make Napkin Embellishments

Have you wanted to know How to make Napkin Embellishments? Today is your lucky day. In this post, I share How to make Napkin Embellishments for a Mermaid Junk Journal.

Napkin Embellishments

Supplies Used in How to make Napkin Embellishments
Seashell Napkin – I found mine at Tuesday Morning
Jot Glue Sticks – any brand will work
Sheet music
Map
Aleene’s Tacky Glue
Distressed Ink – Vintage Photo, Stormy Sky
Dritz Cheesecloth, 36-Inch by 6-Yard
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist, Mint Julip, Precious Metal and Denim Blue
Sea Themed Stickers
Shell sequins – party supply
Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint, 4-Ounce, Surf
Sewing machine with a dark green thread
100 ORGAN FLAT SHANK 15X1 HAX1 HOME SEWING MACHINE NEEDLES – SIZE #80/12

Here is a video for How to make Napkin Embellishments.

The method I used was very simple. Use a glue stick to adhere music and map paper to the back side of the one ply of the napkin. Trim to size wanted. Sew zigzag stitch around edges. Apply distress inks to edges of each element.

Napkin Embellishments

Add cheesecloth and other embellishments to the pieces. Adhere to journal page using Aleene’s Tacky Glue.

Napkin Embellishments

Using napkins as an embellishment inside a junk journal is easy and beautiful. Each time a napkin is used you can get a different look, depending on the other elements you use.

Napkin Embellishments

What I like about using a napkin is I can create several elements to go into the junk journal and thus carry out the same theme. Or I can use only one of the napkin embellishments for a focal point.

Napkin Embellishments

There really isn’t any limit to what you can do with these new napkin embellishments in your junk journals.

Stay tuned for the tutorial on A Mermaid Tale Junk Journal where I used these elements.

Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal

Loving this Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal I created as a custom order. It is so much fun selecting items to put inside these junk journals when I know that the person really loves Mermaids and the sea.

Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal

To make this Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal I used three different digital kits from Calico Collage. I used Enchanted, Summer Paradise, and Mermaid Tale. Since she had already seen the mermaid I used for the cover of another custom order I thought I would use the same image. But for the inside of this Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal, I mixed it up a bit.

Here is a Flip through video of this Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal.

A removable bracelet was attached to the cover of the Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal. There is a charm that would remain on the journal when the bracelet was removed as I thought it needed a little charm to stay behind.

Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal

Different colors of metal were used for the bracelet. I like the antique brass, gold, and silver together. It makes me think that a mermaid would have trinkets from all over and these wouldn’t match.

Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal

Making the bracelet was also a great way to use up some of this bead stash I’ve had for years. It’s so much fun to see what cool things I can find for a bracelet. I’ll make more of these.

The pages inside this Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal are all unique. While I might use the same images, when I put a journal together with all the other added elements it will look different from any other journal.

Enchanted Mermaid Junk JournalEnchanted Mermaid Junk Journal

Adding Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists to the pages in this journal makes me smile. Love seeing the glimmer and shimmer on the pages. I want to pet the paper. lol

Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal

Found some really cool aqua fabric that was printed with what looks like cup rings. Using these scraps was an added bonus. It used the items that would be trash to someone else and adds a bit of color to the items.

Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal

For this Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal, I decided to color a few images with my Chameleon Pens. Once the image was colored I then added some Tulip Dimensional Confetti glitter paint. Also added some clear Tulip Glitter paint to the mermaid’s hair.

Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal

This Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal is so beautiful that I’m going to be sad when I ship it to its new owner. Making another one of these Enchanted Mermaid Junk Journal may be in my future so that I can keep one.

Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

One of my friends contacted me and asked if I would make a Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal for her. I told her yes I would! Looking through Calico Collage I found the Enchanted Journal Kit that had a few Mermaids and then I did a search on the internet for a couple more images I could use.

Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

For the cover, I used the Mermaid image from the Calico Collage Enchanted digital journal kit. This was layered on top of a pretty mermaid cardstock. Then I used some Tulip dimensional glitter paint and added sparkle to her. The sea horse is from a stamp set out of the Creative Stamping Magazine from the UK, The Sea View Collection by Sheena Douglass. These images stamp beautifully.

Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

It was fun to create some journal bling or a journal charm to go with this theme. Digging around in my jewelry making stash I found a few items to use. Visiting the local craft stores I found a letter C to add to the journal charm that I decided to make into a bracelet. She can leave it on the journal or take it off and wear the bracelet if she chooses.

Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

This Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal measures 8.25 tall by 4.25 when closed and has 18 sheets of paper for a total of 72 pages to use.

Here is a flip through video of the Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal.

Since she said, Mermaids, shells and the ocean I went to work collecting things to make the journal. Using a couple of stamp sets that had a Mermaid Images was fun to create little journal cards.

Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

While out shopping at the Dollar Tree I found these really cool sea themed stickers. I love how they shift to another image when you tilt them.

Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

Love adding coloring book pages and found a few that fit the theme for this Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal.

This time around I decided to add some fold out or flip out pages. I wanted this Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal to be pretty and useful for her.

Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

Another technique I tried was using small jute to tie items into the journal. I think it gives that sea feel to the elements. I also like using cheese cloth that was sprayed with Tattered Angles Glimmer mists. It reminds me of nets.

Most of the pages have been sprayed with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists. Several of the pages were stamped with a starfish and Tim Holtz Distressed Ink.

This Mermaid Travelers Notebook Junk Journal is full of lots of tuck spots and pockets. It was fun looking around for elements to add to this journal.

Nautical Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

Continuing with my #junkjournaljuly I’ve created a Nautical Travelers Notebook Junk Journal for July 6th. My idea was to share how I decorate a Travelers Notebook. Adding the ephemera and tuck spots as well as stamping.

Nautical Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

This Nautical Travelers Notebook Junk Journal measures 8.25 inches tall by 4.25 inches wide when closed. It has 15 sheets of paper folded in half for a total of 60 pages.

A few of the Items used inside this Nautical Travelers Notebook Junk Journal
7Gypsies Architextures – Trinkets – Seashore Decor
Creative Stamping Magazine Issue 43 Stamp set
Cheese Cloth
Old Calendar images
Various papers – Map, textured, coloring book pages, graph paper, cardstock, mop up paper, notebook paper and scrapbook paper. There isn’t a limit to the type of paper you use.
Sewing Machine
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists, Blue Bubbles, Denim Blue
Waxed Cotton Cord from Canvas Corp Home Basics
Brutus Monroe Detail Ink and Cornflower Surface Ink
MISTI
Note cards
Navy & Ivory Chevron is from Canvas Corp Brands

Here is a video showing How to make the Nautical Travelers Notebook Junk Journal.

Isn’t the 7Gypsies Architextures – Trinkets – Seashore Decor a perfect touch for the cover? I added a some Brutus Monroe Surface ink – Cornflower on top of the Welcome Mermaid. It deepened the color. I just love the texture.

For this Nautical Travelers Notebook Junk Journal, I decided to pull some blue scrapbook papers from my stash. These pages reminded me of the water and I knew that the print was light enough of several of the pages to be written upon.

Nautical Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

As always I like using up scraps that I have on hand. I made tags out of Navy & Ivory Chevron is from Canvas Corp Brands paper. I sewed a scrap of dictionary paper on top that had been sprayed with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists and stamped with Let your dreams set sail. After punching a hole in the top of the tag I added Waxed Cotton Cord from Canvas Corp Home Basics. Doesn’t it feel like something Nautical?

Nautical Travelers Notebook Junk Journal

My friends are such a big blessing to me. One year a friend got a beautiful daily travel calendar. There are so many beautiful images in this calendar and he was throwing away the pages when the days were done. I asked if I could have those and I’m so glad I saved these from 2006! Tell your friends to save these items for you to use.

I’m so glad that I purchased the Creative Stamping Magazine Issue 43 Stamp set
from Barns and Noble. I’m loving the nautical themed stamps that came with the magazine. I used the heart knot rope on the tops of several pages. My MISTI sure comes in handy to get precise stamping every time.
