One of my Facebook friends asked How to make a Midori Travelers Notebook Cover. This post is dedicated to answering her question. Using Fabric, Fun Foam (or craft foam) and my sewing machine I create a cool Midori Travelers Notebook Cover.

Any Midori cover that you want to make is basically the same concept. The cover needs to be slightly larger than the insert and you need a way to attach the inserts to the cover.

For my Midori Travelers Notebook Cover, I wanted something different and not a traditional cover. Leather covers are beautiful but it does cost a lot to buy the leather. I wanted something pretty and flexible. That is when I started playing with Fabric and Fun Foam.

Once I chose the fabrics I wanted to use the rest was really easy. My husband gave me a small embroidery machine for our Wedding Anniversary last year and I’m loving having this little machine. It is easy to add a design or words to projects. And I don’t have to wait in line at our shop WeEmbroider.com when I want something made. lol Since I’m making a journal cover I decided that the word Journal should be added to the cover.

Lightweight fusible interfacing was used on the inside to help with making a pocket and finishing the inside. Sew the right side to the wrong side of the fusible interfacing all the way around, Cut a slit in the Interfacing in the center. Turn right side out after clipping the corners. Press the piece flat with an iron. This will attach the interfacing to the fabric. Now you have a finished unit that won’t have raw edges in the journal.

Use ATG gun to cover the front of the fun foam. Turning the edges and tucking the corners. On the inside of the fun, foam cover run ATG or Scor tape to hold the inside in place. Sew a zig-zag stitch around the cover from the outside.

Mark placement for holes. Punch with a 1/4 hole punch. Use 1/4 inch grommets and set with preferred tools. I used a HomeProLR in the video.

Once the grommets are in place run elastic through the holes and tie with two square knots.  Admire your new Midori Travelers Notebook Cover, isn’t it pretty?

Here are a few of the supplies used for the Midori Travelers Notebook Cover.

Here is a video of how to make a Midori Travelers Notebook Cover.

As you can see in the video I shared I made a smaller Midori cover that is being used to hold Harlequin Romance Novels. My friend loves the cover and I ended up making 3 in total so she could have one at home and one at the lake and give one to her Sister In Law.

Making the Midori Travelers Notebook Cover was easy for me. What I love about is that I can combine sewing using fabric and paper all in one project. Isn’t that what we should all do, something we love? Making Junk Journals gives me so much joy. Combining paper crafts with sewing and other mediums is truly a multimedia artist dream come true.
