Today I’m sharing a Heart Layered Cards Tutorial. Using a digital download from Calico Collage I show how to put beautiful layered journal cards together. This will be the February Challenge inside the Friendly Junk Journal People Facebook group.

Supplies used for the Heart Layered Cards Tutorial

The digital file from Calico Collage helps to make this Heart Layered Cards Tutorial super easy. But you don’t have to use the digital file. Grab some book pages, scrapbook paper, old wall paper, wrapping paper or any other items you love.

Heart Layered Cards Tutorial

In the digital kit there are Base Cards, Topper Cards, Hearts and Words. Fussy cut the elements. I printed all of the items on 60 pound white linen cardstock, using my HP Envy Photo 7855 with the Instant Ink Program. The ink program is a subscription, but I feel it is so worth having all the ink I need to print 300 full color, edge to edge pages for $11.99 a month.

Once all the items have been fussy cut, apply distress ink, walnut stain to the edges with a blending tool.. It gives it a vintage, shabby chic look.

Some of the patterns that Norella used on the papers are patterns that I drew for stencils. Norella is so clever that she can use my drawings to create cool background patterns. She also has a Heart digital paper pack that features 24 pages using my drawings.

Layer the elements on the topper card. I chose to layer a torn strip from an old bible to add a bit of interest to the layers. Use a small amount of Aleene’s Tacky glue to adhere each layer. Above I added a thin ribbon around the top layer before I adhered to the bottom layer.

The pink avocado dyed vintage lace was a gift from a friend. I thought it was a perfect accent to add to the cards.

Sewing around the edge of the top card gives a cute shabby feel to these cards. I prefer to use black thread as it stands out more on the cards. Use what ever color of thread you like. However, if you don’t have a sewing machine you could use the Shabby Stitches rubber stamps to create a sewn effect or a pen and draw faux stitches.

Self adhesive flat back rhinestones were a perfect accent to use on these beautiful Heart Layered Cards. It also helped me use a few of these up as I’ve had the rhinestones for a while now!
