Sharing How to make an Anti Static Bag for Embossing. I have been embossing for years and it is annoying to get the stray specks of embossing powder on your project. I had a purchased anti-static bag, but I knew there was a cheaper way to make my own. I started looking around at the supplies I had on hand and also on the web. Here is what I came up with.
Supplies used in How to make an Anti Static Bag for Embossing:
- One leg from a clean pair of pantyhose ( one side had a runner in the leg, so I usually wash these and keep them, never know when I might need one for a project! lol)
- baby powder
- Scissors
- A glass or wide mouth jar
Method for How to make an Anti Static Bag for Embossing:
I cut one leg from the clean pantyhose close to the very top.
Then I pushed the toe of the hose into a glass and pulled the top over the lip of the glass. This made it very easy to then dump baby powder into the hose. I put about a 1/4 cup of baby powder into the hose. Could put more or less. It depends on how much baby powder you have, and if you want to make more than one anti-static bag. I made two so that when I’m teaching a workshop or if my friends come over I have extras and we don’t have to wait for someone to be finished…
I pulled the hose out of the glass and tied a knot close to the powder. Just one knot, as there will be three layers of hose to protect the powder from spilling out of the hose…
Next, I pushed the whole thing back through the leg of the hose and tied another knot, repeated one more time and tied a final or third knot. This kind of reminded me of a hacky sack that we used to play with back in the 80’s.. lol I guess if you changed out the powder for little beans of some kind you could make your own hacky sack to play with. lol…
Once the final knot was tied I cut off the excess hose and the anti-static bag was ready to use. Pretty clever huh…

I hope this helps you in saving money. Because I know that I would rather spend my money on an item that I couldn’t make myself!

Okay, LOVE the anti Static Bag. my only question is how did you know to use baby powder??? How does it work?? You do realize I’m typing this and picking through a sack of old hose! Does it matter which type of panty hose? Will the extra hold everything inside work ok (obviously they did not hold everything inside) or can they be the old, old stockings (old because I can’t wear them anymore!) ? PLEASE get back to me on this. I’m so jazzed that you have this!!! If this is all it is??? Why are they charging so much for them??? Urrggghhh!!!

lol I’ve been using the baby powder off and on over the years when I couldn’t find my official talc anti static bag. It has something to do with whats in the powder. The store bought one is a better version because it is pure, where the baby powder has other stuff added.. So that is the price difference, as with most “art supplies”.. Doesn’t matter on the panty hose, just as long as it will hold enough of the powder. I made mine three layers so that it held the powder, but when you tap it on the paper it would still poof.. Think of whacking a chalk eraser and how the dust would fly… lol.. Have fun! and I’m glad I posted this for you to find! do come back and check out my other posts. 🙂

Hi,
Thank you so much! I am just now making time to get into paper crafting, so am collecting basics. I googled how to make my own anti static bag, and lo and behold, there your link was!
I appreciate it very much. I wondered if a dryer softener sheet would work, but I have a couple bottles of Baby ‘cornstarch’ that I can try with an old nylon!
Aloha,

Do you know if baking powder or baking soda or cornstarch will work.
Thanks

I LOVE how when I search “homemade anti static bag,” a whole bunch of stuff comes up about electronics, but the scrapbooking application is listed first! Total domination! Thanks for the tip! I used an old thin sock and cornstarch and it seems to work just as well also. All the best!
