Today I’m sharing a Sewn Sunflower Journal Cover Tutorial with you. This is a super fun and easy way to create a custom cover for a journal, using fabric scraps!

Supplies Used for the Sewn Sunflower Journal Cover Tutorial.
  • Printed Canvas Scrap – from Canvas Corp Brands
  • Sunflower Fabric
  • Aleene’s Tacky Glue
  • Burlap
  • Lace
  • Sewing Machine
  • Yellow 12 x 12 Cardstock.

Sewing a journal cover is pretty simple. I chose a scrap of printed canvas as the base to hold the other fabrics I wanted to use. Generally I will make a cover about 1 inch longer and taller than my journal pages.

Lay out the fabric as the base and then layer other fabrics on top until you get the design you like. Aleene’s tacky glue is great to hold the fabric in place with a few dots here and there until it is sewn. If you don’t plan to sew, then be very meticulous in applying glue to hold the fabric together.  Use your favorite glue to adhere the fabric if you don’t plan to sew.

Once all the layers are laid out and tacked into place head over to the sewing machine and sew the items together.

For the inside of the cover I chose to use 12 x 12 cardstock cut down to be about a 1/2 smaller than the outside. For the pocket inside sew the top edge then adhere into position on the paper. Glue the inside cover to the back of the fabric and allow the glue to dry. Once the glue is dry sew around the outside edge to merge the fabric and paper together.

The Sunny Mornings Journal kit from Calico Collage was used in this journal. When I originally printed the pages on my laser printer it didn’t print edge to edge so I ended up cutting down the pages from 11 x 8.5 inches.

Check out the Paper Lace Edge Tutorial to see how I added a pretty edge to the pages.

Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists were used through stencils for the backgrounds. On the left the Connected Flowers Stencil was used. The right side shows the Retro Panel 4 Stencil.

After applying the TAGM through the Retro Panel 4 Stencil I stamped the Daisy Trio around the edge. I like how it gives a pretty touch to the page. When I’m in the mood I will stamp out several of the Butterfly Sm and color with TAGM. These are perfect to pop on a page when you need a little decoration. Adding words or word phrases to the journal is also a great addition. The Don’t forget to fly was stamped on a scrap of paper and then layered on a piece of neon green.

The page on the right is a version of my Mixed Media Frankenpages. Check out the blog post with a tutorial video to see how I create pages like this one. For the triple pocket check out the Gel Print Embellishment Junk Journal Tutorial.

Quilted Star Bursts Stencil is shown on the left side. Stamping images is one of my favorite ways to embellish a page. First I stamped the Leafy Branch. On top I layered a fussy cut Composed stamp image. Then I stamped Memories on a scrap to finish off the page.

If you love the look of old Library cards, but can’t seem to find them to use in your journals, then check out my Library Card Stamp. I love that I can stamp this on my papers and create a custom library card in my journals.

I’m thankful that Norella helped turn my photos of flowers and gel prints into journal cards. These can be found in my shop.

There are so many beautiful images in the Sunny Mornings digital kits from Calico Collage. You will want to get all of them!

The tag was large and I decided to create a tag booklet that hangs over the page. This is a great way to add additional writing space to a journal.

The outside of the cover turned out beautiful! Use up those fabric scraps on your next journal cover. It is so easy that you will want to make a bunch!
