Using scraps, Calico Collage digitals to create clusters, February 2023 challenge for the Friendly Junk Journal people group.

Using the floral botanicals digitals by Calico Collage with punched out scrap pieces, with gel prints, Linda layered the pieces with thread. She stamped out words Find the passion and Be Yourself for the sentiments.

Remember, if you don’t have punches, try ripping or fussy cut pieces of paper for your layers.

Adding things like thread, paper flowers, buttons or even lace are other ideas. Keep them flat enough to use in your journals.

For these clusters Linda used book pages, thread, fussy cut Flowers digitals by Calico Collage, paper flowers with gel prints. She added her Dream and Beautiful stamps for her sentiments.

Creating these cluster elements are fun, keep it simple or as complex as you like. Use up those scraps, find images from magazines to fussy cut, the options are limitless!

Floating Pocket Tutorial

Today I’m sharing a Floating Pocket Tutorial with you. This is a great way to add additional ephemera and writing space that can be moved around in a journal. Use up those book pages and create a few for your journals.

Supplies Used for the Pocket

Grab any size book page for this project. The bigger the page the bigger the pocket. Linda had fun making narrow pockets that could hold book marks.

After creating the shell of your floating pocket, using pieces of scraps of paper. Linda chose to use gel print scraps that she had created.

You can also create something that can be placed at the top of your floating pocket. Linda took a piece of a paper bag, stamped with a stamp from the Journal QT with black archival ink.

Because this is a floating pocket you will want to decorate the back. Taking scraps of her gel print and another that she had sprayed with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist. Linda then layered them on the back and glued some digital images from Calico Collage and some stickers.

Using a scrap of paper grocery sack is a great way to add writing space. For her large folded tag, using the Mistletoe stamp with the archival jet black ink, stamped the outside and inside. The Christmas Bow stamp was created with gold embossing powder on red paper.

Go ahead and add your embellished book marks and tags. You can decide to have two or three pockets it’s all what you want to do!

Envelope Band Tutorial

Today I’m sharing an Envelope Band Tutorial. This is the November challenge inside the Friendly Junk Journal People Facebook Group. Follow the tutorial to see how to create a band for an envelope and then create your own and share it in the event.

During a live stream I showed how to create a magnetic band for holding a faux envelope closed. The audience commented that they liked this idea so I decided to create a tutorial and make this the November Challenge.

To create the band we need to know what it will wrap around. So I folded a coffee dyed paper to create a faux envelope.

Then I selected a few scraps of paper to create the band. This is a perfect way to use up those scraps. If you don’t have one long enough, then glue a few together to make the strip you want.

Remember when I share an idea like this, think about how you can make this your own. What will you change, what supplies do you have that you could use?

Once you have the faux envelope, wrap a strip of paper around it, make sure it over laps and cut any excess off that you don’t need.

Use the first strip to make a wider strip for a layered look.

Before you glue anything down, fold the strip so that you know where the top and bottom are gong to be.

Then on the bottom half about half an inch from the edge place a dot of glue on the bottom paper to hold a magnet. Lay the top part of the paper over the magnet and glue down the bottom and middle section, creating a sandwich of paper, magnet, paper. Leave the top section unglued.

Fold the strip around the envelope with the bottom portion down first. Then separate the layers for the top half. Position over the bottom and place a magnet over the bottom magnet, with the bottom paper between. Apply a drop of glue on the magnet and then fold down the top layer to create a sandwich to hold the magnet in place.

Now that the magnets are in place you can continue on and decorate the band. In my example I used some old thread, a couple of paper flowers and a stamped word – Thoughts.

There are so many ways that you can create these bands and add embellishments. I hope that you enjoyed seeing this idea and are inspired to create your own and share it in the Friendly Junk Journal People Facebook group!

Some of the easiest altered paperclips are using fabric and fibers. In the examples below the fabric and fibers were pulled through the paperclip and then machine stitched. If you don’t have a sewing machine, these could also be hand sewn, glued or even stapled. Think creatively and find new ways to create your own version of Altered Paperclips.

Layers of paper is another way to create these paperclips. Use up those scraps you have to create unique looking paperclips. Rubber stamps can help add more charm to these as well.

Tip – use a black marker to draw a line around the edge to define the pieces, like the paperclip in the lower left corner.

The key is just to have fun while crating. Grab some of your favorite supplies and see what you can create and make sure you check out the event in the Friendly Junk Journal People Facebook group.
