Today lets do a Trick or Treat Halloween Altered Envelope Tutorial. Altering an outdated envelope to be used inside a junk journal. Die cut shapes and stamps help to make this a super easy tutorial.

It isn’t a trick, let’s get started on this Trick or Treat Halloween Altered Envelope Tutorial. Begin with an envelope. Mine was left over from one of our old businesses. Any envelope will work. If yours is used and you don’t have the flap check out this video for more ideas on how to alter envelopes for Halloween.

Cut two inches from the ends of the envelope. Save these pieces as they will become pockets.  Place the opened envelope center and one of the ends inside a spray box. Spray Tattered Angels Almost Black, Tangy Lime, and Splatter Safety Orange on the pieces. Flip the envelope over and spray the inside Tangy Lime.

Cut a piece of ivory cardstock 3 x 3.5 inches. Spray with Tattered Angels Tangy Lime and splatter Almost Black on the card.

Apply Distress Ink, Black Soot and then Walnut Stain to all the edges of the envelope pieces and the card.

Stamp sentiment on white cardstock with graphite black ink. Mat with black cardstock.

Adhere the pocket on the front of the envelope covering the return envelope. Create a skull, circle and tulle element and adhere to the pocket. Place sentiment on the right side of the pocket.

Stamp bat on the journal card. Place card inside pocket on the front of the envelope.

Flip envelope over and create Skull and Circle element and adhere on the back so that it catches the flap but isn’t glued shut.

Faux Seed Packet and Altered Paperclip Tutorial using book pages, stamps and more I’ll show how to create a faux seed packet and an altered paperclip. Use up those left over bits of paper to create a fun seed packet, this design can also be used as a coin envelope.

I’ve been planting seeds, getting ready for the spring planting season and was inspired to create a faux seed packet. Looking through my stash I found scraps that I felt would work for this project. Book pages and gel prints are great for this project. Even if the gel print wasn’t perfect, it can add a pop of color and pattern to the seed packet.

Don’t worry if the paper you have doesn’t have a crisp pattern, most of it will be covered with other bits. So use up those not so favorite pieces and make something beautiful.

Once you get started making these, soon you will be lost in creating and have several to use in journals.

To get started with this Faux Seed Packet and Altered Paperclip Tutorial, select a book page and then score it and cut it down. The front of the seed packet measures about 3.25 wide by 4.25 once it has the sides and tops folded to the inside.

Cut another book page or gel print or any other paper to measure about 3.25 inches wide by about  5.75 to 6 inches tall, this will become the back of the faux seed packet.

Score from the bottom at 4.5 inches leaving the top portion to be the fold over part of the envelope.  In the tutorial I trimmed the top down to 1 inch and then covered the inside of the envelope flap with another piece of paper.

Since I used a book paged that I painted with yellow acrylic paint I decided to stamp over the paint with the Henna Rose Stamp using Archival Ink Jet Black. Stamping over the book page helps obscure the text and adds a unique pattern to the paper.

Going back to the front plain book page using Mustard Seed Distress Oxide  ink add color to the paper. Then add different shades of yellow Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists to deepen the color. Using the Henna Rose Stamp again add on top of the color for more pattern.

Fold in the tabs on the front of the seed packet and then adhere using Aleene’s Tacky glue, or your adhesive of choice.

Apply Distress Ink Walnut Stain around the edges both inside and out of the seed packet.

Decorate the front of the seed packet with the Chamomile Stamp set, colored with watercolor pencil on a piece of ivory scrap of paper.

For the back of the seed packet select a piece of coffee dyed paper and stamp the Hand Drawn Notebook paper, then fussy cut around the image.

Adhere the notebook paper on the back and layer the Little Daisy water colored flower in the corner.

For the altered paperclip use a piece of cardstock scrap and cover it with scraps left over from creating the seed packet.  Round the corners with the corner chomper. Add a snippet of lace, the Stamped Leaves and bloom to decorate the front of the paperclip.

For the inside create a simple journal card that has coffee dyed paper on the back and stamped in the corner with the Henna Rose Stamp.

Supplies used

Embellishing Music Journal Pages is made easy when you have a creative kit. Using one of the belly band strips for the right side of the page is a handy way to hold a journal card. The journal card was made from handmade paper. I have a handmade paper tutorial video or check out the blog, that shows my process. In my shop I have a selection of handmade papers for sale.

Layering the painted laser cut chipboard piece over a strip of hand dyed music on the journal card is a great way to add interest.

Book pages are so handy to create pockets for a journal. Even when I made the pocket in error for another project I was able to save it and use it here! Don’t throw it out if you feel you made a mistake. It is an opportunity to try something new!

Change up that book page by adding distress inks. Taking plain book page to colorful is so easy!

Layer a page from an old hymnal to continue the music theme. I love using my sewing machine to add a few stitches to my journal pages.

Fill the pocket with a premade journal card from the creative kit and the journal page is done!

During the Live Creating a Music Themed Mixed Media Folio on November 27 I show how to create mixed media papers and then create a folio. Using book pages as a base for decorative papers is so easy and these turned out beautiful.

This project was inspired by Cameila Crafts Designs Five Minute Folio – One sheet Trifold Folio.

To begin this Music Themed Mixed Media Folio Tutorial I started by painting book pages with White Acrylic Craft Paint. Use up those book pages that you have removed from books. If you don’t have decorative papers, make your own using book pages.

Allow the paint to dry on the book pages. I like to do several and stack them around until these are dry. That way I can just jump right into decorating the pages and I don’t’ have to stop to paint new ones.

Using a stencil like the More Little Daisies and Distress Oxide Inks apply color all over the book page. I love using oval blending brushes, they are sold out of the ones I have but I saw these colorful ones and think I will order a set for myself.

Add a layer of stamping over the stenciled book page. Using Archival Ink Jet Black I randomly place stamped images all over. Since I’m not sure which direction the paper will be used I like to rotate the images so that there isn’t just one direction. Feel free to stamp anyway you wish. You may want to have a direction paper for your projects.

Another way to decorate these book pages is to use watercolor paint. Add spots of color all over the page, Or paint the whole page one color. Have fun choosing different colors. Then add some stencil patterns over the top. I used similar colors of distress oxide ink that matched the watercolor paint. Doing so adds depth to the page.

Creating these decorative papers has no limit! Stamping directly over the painted paper and then coloring in the images is another way to add patterns. Take a look at the supplies and tools you already have and see how you can make your own decorative papers.

Once you have a section of decorative papers it is time to create the base to attach all the papers. If you don’t have 12 x 12 scrapbook papers you can make your own decorative papers. I choose to use a few book pages to create a 12 x 12 base for the folio. Just glue the edges together until you get the size of paper you want.

Cut down the new papers you created into smaller pieces, Or leave them whole. Adhere the papers on the 12 x 12 paper until the whole thing is covered front and back.

To create the folio base cut the 12 x 12 paper. Cut off a 4 inch by 12 inch strip. Then cut the 4 inch strip: one 4×4 inch square, which will leave a 4 x 8 inch rectangle. Trim the 4 x 4 to 3 3/4 x 4 inches and then cut it in half making each piece 3 3/4 x 2 inches, set aside. Cut the 4 x 8 inch piece in half to create two 2 x 8 inch strips. Set one strip aside, this will become a long pocket or it could be a belly band. Cut the other strip into two pieces that measure, 3 3/4 x 2 inches.

Score the 12 x 8 inch piece to create a 3 panel folio. Score at 4 inches and then back up 1/8 of an inch and score again. I like to rotate my paper so that I can do the other side the same Score at 4 inches and back up 1/8 of an inch and score again – or you can go out to the 8 inch mark and score on the other side closest to the outside edge. Watch the video to see what I mean.

Apply distress inks to the edges of all the pieces. If you like to have thumb holes on your pockets now is the time to do that! Rounding the corners of some of the pieces is also something that can be done. I only did it on the small belly band.

Because I knew that I wanted the full width and depth of each pocket to be utilized I added 1 inch wide strips of paper to the backs of my pocket elements. Basically adding tabs all the way around so that when those are folded in and glued the full pocket can be used.

Adhere the pocket pieces to the inside of the folio. Have fun with the patterns and choosing which ones you want to be able to see more of inside the folio.

Once all the pockets are in place then choose items to put in the pockets. I made a journal card during the live stream. After the live I created a tag using one of the painted papers.

This is one of those projects where you could spend a session creating lots of pattern papers and then sit down and make a bunch of folio bases. So many wonderful goodies can be added to this folio. What a great gift this would be! Or you can make one to match the theme of a journal and it can hold extra supplies to decorate the journal and blank journal space items.
