Members of the FJJP asked for a new tutorial. How to attach chain closure and flip through of Lace Song Bird Junk Journal is the focus of this post today. The Lace Song Bird Junk Journal was made using the Calico Collage kit Song Bird.
The Lace Song Bird Junk Journal measures 8.5 inches tall by 6 inches wide with a two-inch spine. There are 3 signatures of 10 sheets of paper folded to make 120 pages. Fabric and lace were used for the cover and the closure is a beautiful chain filled with charms to hold the journal closed.
Chain Closure supplies used in the Lace Song Bird Junk Journal
- 10 mm chain that is about 5 inches long
- Large Jump rings
- Two half-inch lobster claws
- Various charms
- Beaded components
- Small 6mm Jump Rings
- Needle nose pliers
- Crop-a-dile hole punch and eyelet setter
- Eyelets
To add the chain closure first begin by punching holes in the front and back covers. I used a template to help with the placement of the holes. Then insert the eyelets into the holes.
Use one the large jump rings and one lobster claw on the back cover. Attach the other large jump ring through the front cover.
Select charms and bead components and attach with jump rings to the length of chain. For this closure I wanted to have extra chain for the charms and if the journal got fuller with new additions.
Once the charms are added to the chain add the remaining lobster claw to the end of the chain. Attach the closure to the journal.

The Song Bird Junk Journal came about because of my mother’s love for birds. I chatted with Norella the owner and creator of Calico Collage and she agreed that a bird journal kit was a good idea. Then my mother died and this caused Norella to work quicker on getting the journal kit made. The Song Bird Junk Journal kit is beautiful! She did an outstanding job, and I’m so happy she made this journal.
When I got the kit I then started looking through my stash to see what I wanted to use with the beautiful images. It was lucky to find a stash of peach lace. I had forgotten that I had it, left over from making bridesmaids dresses years ago.

The lace was sewn onto the pages after I used some Vintage Photo Distressed Inks on the pages and Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists. Several stamps from my stash made an appearance on the pages too.
My friends of the Friendly Junk Journal People Facebook group have blessed me with wonderful packages and I was able to use several items inside this journal.
In conclusion, making the Song Bird Junk Journal was a great therapy session for me. It was good to remember my mom and her love of birds. Norella even made a couple of images from a photo of my mom when she was eighteen and these are used in the journal.
My hope, however is that you enjoyed seeing this journal and how to attach chain closure and flip through of Song Bird Junk Journal.
