Almost daily I get questions on how to make a cover for a junk journal. I decided to share a video with the steps I take for a cover. How to make a cover for Christmas Junk Journal.

What you will need for this project. How to make a cover for Christmas Junk Journal
Pages – Calico Collage Golden Christmas, I have mine stamped and sprayed, ready to add trim
Fabric for outside cover
Chipboard – can use a cereal box or purchase chipboard or even an old book.
Cardstock for inside covers
Photocopy of music out of an old hymnal
Glue Stick
Aleene’s Tacky Glue
Sewing machine – Mine is old but works great.
Needles I use Organ Flat Shank Size 80/12, Use what is recommended by your sewing machine. 
Thread of your choice – I used red.
Ribbon
Washi Tape
Distress Ink, Black Soot, and Vintage Photo
Fiskars Scissors – to trim the thread\
Waxed Linen Thread
Bookbinders Needle
Bookbinder’s awl in a kit.

Tip for making a cover from scratch. Know the size of your pages first. Once I have all my pages done and I stack them into Signatures (a group of folded papers) I measure. Measure the thickness of the pages. In my case, these were about 1 inch. The height of the page needs to be measured. My pages are 8 inches tall. The width next. Mine is 5.25 inches wide without lace, with lace 6 inches.

The book insides measure 8 x 5.25 with a one-inch spine. I want there to be plenty of room so I then add a little to each and end up with the following. The height 8.5, the width 6.25 and then the spine is 1.25.

Cut the chipboard two pieces 8.5 x 6.25 one piece 8.5 x 1.25. These will be the insides of your cover for stability. Layout these pieces and then measure a large rectangle. In my case, it was 16 inches wide by 10 inches tall.

Adhere the chipboard to the cover (fabric or paper) with Aleene’s Tacky glue. Use a bone folder to smooth out the glue and for the cover to adhere.

Fold over the edges to the inside of the cover. Again use Aleene’s Tacky Glue.

Once the cover outside is complete, I will embellish the cover if I plan to sew, I do it now. For this Christmas Junk Journal, I used images from Calico Collage, copy of music, scrap of paper, washi tape and ribbon. Just play around with the composition until you see what you like.

Create pockets if you want them on the inside cardstock pieces. Adhere the inside pages to the cover with the spine being first. (if you want to do a hidden spine on a book you would sew to the 1.25 x 8.5 inch spine piece before you adhere it to the cover.

Over the page Notepad Tutorial is a great way to add writing space to a journal. This removable stack of papers adds a pretty collection of papers to write upon.

Supplies used.
Over the page Notepad Tutorial
Select a piece of cardstock for the notepad base. In my case I used a 5.25×11 inch piece of paper. Score the top edge so that it is shorter than the height of your page, I scored mine at 8.25 inches.

Dig through your stash and pull out papers that you like. Sheet music, Tattered Angles Dyed Paper along with other papers give a great variety.

Stack the papers along the score line, but not over the score. These can be glued or use a paperclip to hold them in place. Once all the papers are stacked add a piece of lace and then sew along the top of the stack.

Add decorations to the page, like stickers and stamps.

Decorate the base page with distress ink and a page from a tear off notepad. Attach the notepad paper with washi tape. A great way to use up that stash of washi tape! If you don’t have washi tape, you could always use a strip of paper. Further decorate by layering the word Journal over a scrap of fabric in the lower right corner.

Create an altered paperclip with scraps of lace. I like sewing the lace so that it stays flat and doesn’t add too much bulk to my journal.

Slide the notepad over the page and secure with the altered paperclip.

Creating Mini Journal using Instant Ink Box

In this post I’m Creating Mini Journal using Instant Ink Box. I’ve been saving the boxes from the Instant Ink program and decided that I would try to use one for a junk journal.  The idea came about after I cut the top off of a couple of boxes to use for storage in a drawer.

Supplies used:
To get started on this journal select items for the cover, In my case I used an instant ink box from HP. But look around your home, you may have another box you can use. Don’t limit yourself, there are so many things you can use!

Adhere papers to the cover. If using corrugated cardboard I like to cover it with a random paper – like book pages. This helps cover the texture that corrugated cardboard can have. I don’t want to see that texture in my cover. If you like that texture, then add items as you see fit.

Decorate the cover, adding any embellishments you like. For the inside I used some scrapbook paper and added pockets. I really love the unicorns in the fairytale collection from Calico Collage. She did a beautiful job creating this kit!

When I create my journal pages I use the size of the cover as a guide. My pages are a fraction of an inch smaller than the cover so I know everything will fit inside the journal. I also like to create my pages flat and then assemble the journal.

Grab those stamps, stencils and more to create beautiful layered pages. I love mixing Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists, with stamping and stencils.

Even a paint chip from the hardware store can make a useful belly band in a journal. Look at things you find around you to see how these can be used in a journal.

Lace is always fun to add to journals too. I prefer to collect ivory and white lace because it is easy to alter the color. Check out thrift stores for old wedding gowns and lace table cloths. Those can be cut up and used in journals.

Whatever supplies or style you use to create a journal, just have fun creating! Remember there is no wrong way to make a junk journal. Use what you have on hand, collect things you love and enjoy the process. Have fun creating your own version.

To begin the Bellyband with Flip and Pockets Tutorial, start with a sheet of paper that measures 11 x 8.5 inches. This can be any paper, in my case it was a sheet that my mother in law gave me and it was a dark manila.

Score at 4.25 inches and again about 2.75 inches from the other end. Look at the diagram below to see where to score. You can also make it any size you like. If your journal card is smaller then you can make a smaller space for the pocket.

Fold over the first flap at the score line. Next, fold over the second flap. It may need to be adjusted depending on how deep you made the first score line.

Since I wanted my first flap to be able to hold a card that measured 4 x 8 inches I added a strip of paper. Cut a strip 1 inch by 8.5 inches and glue it from top to bottom about half an inch in to create a tab for the pocket.

Now you have a base to decorate. Cut pieces of paper to decorate and create pockets. In the video I created two pockets for the smaller flap and one for the wider flap.

Once all the pockets have been created adhere to the base. Now you can fill the pockets.

For the inside of the flap I decided not to decorate it, but you can add anything you like.

Lots of goodies for the pockets here. A mini journal, tag and an altered paint chip.

The band that holds the flip out is a two inch strip of paper that I attached scraps to and then sewed around each scrap. It measures 4.25 inches on each side.

Using Velcro I attached the strips together and then folded the excess around to the back. Then I glued the pieces on the back and to help keep it smooth I applied a piece of packing tape.
