Today I’m sharing a Junk Journal Cover Tutorial Using Wallpaper. My neighbor gave me three wallpaper sample books and I decided that as part of my #useitupjuly challenge I would use some of the wallpaper for a junk journal cover.

When I make a junk journal, I begin with the pages. Once all the pages are made I use the measurement of the width, height and then dept of the stack of pages to determine the cover size. For example, I use the largest pages in the journal which are the digital images that measured 5.25 x 8. when folded in half. The stack of pages (8 sheets folded in half makes 32 pages, times three signatures for a total of 96 pages.) then measured 1.75 inches tall.

Once I know this measurement I decide how much I want the embellished pages to stick out from the cover, in this case, I decided that I wanted to see the lace and only made the cover .25 of an inch wider. The height of the book I decided to give an additional .50 of an inch. Then the spine I decided to add .25 of an inch. That makes the cover piece 5.5 x 8.5 inches- cut two. The spine is 2 x 8.5 inches – Cut one.

Then when I line of these three pieces I can measure how much I need to cover the chipboard. In my case, the chipboard measured 13 inches by 8.5 inches. I added 1.75 to both the height and the width and that was enough to cover the chipboard.

If you have never made a cover before, grab some scraps and practice. Get the hang of how things go together and you can make covers very easily! Just take your time, I know you can make these because I was able to make them. 🙂

Create the inside pieces for the cover by using cardstock or heavy paper. I usually cut cardstock slightly shorter on the width and the height of the chipboard pieces. The piece for the inside spine I cut about 4 inches wide if I have a 2-inch wide spine. This adds strength to the spine and when the side panels are attached it makes a strong book cover.

Attach the pages to the cover. I use the Pamphlet Stitch as that is sturdy and works for me.
